Smith
College will make two gifts to assist with the losses related
to the spate of arson fires set in Northampton on December
27 that claimed the lives of two local men.
The college will donate $5,000
to the City of Northampton to aide the fire and police departments
with costs associated with public safety and the investigation
surrounding the incidents. In addition, the college will
give $2,500 to the Northampton Neighbors Relief Fund, a special
fund set up by the United Way of Hampshire County, administered
by Northampton Cooperative Bank.
Authorities report as many as
15 separate fires were set between 2 and 3:15
a.m. on December 27, all within a half-mile radius in mostly
residential neighborhoods between downtown Northampton and
the municipal airport. An arrest has been made in connection
with the fires. |
