Jhalak
Gives a Glimpse of South Asia
Jhalak is a Hindu word
meaning “glimpse.”
On Friday, March 26, the Smith
community will have a chance to get a glimpse of South Asian
culture during the annual Jhalak at Smith, a celebration
featuring a show, dinner and after-party.
The event, which is coordinated
by Ekta, the South Asian Students’ Association, will
begin with a feast of south Asian dishes, at 5:30 p.m.
in Scott Gym. Mutter paneer (peas and a special cheese),
chicken karma and warm golab jamun (a sweet donut in syrup)
will be on the menu. There will also be vegetarian and
vegan options to accompany the ample helpings of rice and
naan. The dinner costs $5 in advance, $7 at the door.
Following the dinner, Ekta will
present a variety show, beginning at 7:30 p.m., of traditional
south Asian dance, Bollywood-style numbers, poetry readings,
songs and drama. The show is free.
An after-party will follow the
show in Scott Gym starting at 10 p.m., featuring DJ Sebastian
and Sam Light.
