Moved by Student Poem
About two weeks ago, students
in the group Global Action Against Poverty Everywhere (G.A.A.P.E.),
headed by Heather Stone ’10, coordinated Voices for Haiti,
a public benefit performance at the Academy of Music downtown
Northampton.
Hanna Meghji ’12 wrote a and
recited the moving poem Catastrophic Comparison
(viewable at the top of this page) for the benefit.
The benefit, which featured
readings and performances by well-known local and regional
authors, poets and musicians, raised $2,325, all
of which was donated to Partners in Health (PIH), an international
agency for improving the health of people in poverty-stricken
areas. PIH has worked from a base in Haiti for several years.
The Voices for Haiti benefit
was one of several events coordinated by people in the Smith
community to assist with recovery efforts following the January
12 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince and much of
the country.
