Spring Concert: Mix of Pop, R&B, Rap Appeals Widely

At age 26, British singer-songwriter Jay Sean has built a fan base known for its diversity, widespread throughout Europe and south Asia. His Punjabi roots, weaving through his rhythm-and-blues arrangements, appeal to Indian music fans and young people looking for something different, while his sinewy vocals and simple lyrics draw western pop fans.

One of the few places Jay Sean has not achieved household-name status is in the United States.

Perhaps his current tour, which includes a stop at Smith as the headliner for the Recreation Council Spring Concert on Thursday, April 8, will change that. Sean will appear with guest Naughty by Nature, the Grammy Award-winning hip hop trio, starting at 8 p.m. in John M. Greene Hall (doors open at 7).

Tickets for the concert, which is open to the public, are $15 for Smith students, $20 for other Five College students, and $25 for non-students. Tickets are available as of this week, and will be sold at Smith in Campus Center 106, as well as in the Campus Center lower level from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 25, 29, 30, and April 6 and 7 (also available through Northampton Box Office, 413-586-8686.

Jay Sean exploded onto the international pop scene with his first album Me Against Myself, which scored two top-10 singles on the British charts and sold more than 2 million copies in Asia. His second album, My Own Way, yielded hits in the U.K., several eastern European countries, and Japan. Still, Sean had yet to release an album in the United States.

His third album, All or Nothing, is his first American release, and his tour is promoting cuts from that effort, including his American debut single “Down,” as well as the single “Do You Remember.”

The annual Spring Concert, always a popular student event, is part of a series of Rec Council events in the season leading toward the semester’s end.

“The Spring Concert is an opportunity to bring the college together,” says Katy Frank ’10, chair of the concert planning committee. “Rec Council has been working very hard on making this event happen and we cannot wait to share it with the college.”

Rec Council seeks 40 volunteers to work security at the concert. If interested, contact Meera Khandkar, meerakhandkar@gmail.com.

Rec Council will also throw the Starlight Ball, a free outdoor event in the Quadrangle on Saturday, April 10, 8 to 10:30 p.m., featuring live music from Darlingside.
