Lanning
Fountain Beech, Other Trees Damaged by Recent Snow
The
Botanic Garden and campus Arboretum suffered greatly from
last week's heavy wet snow. The most significant loss was
the majestic American Beech (pictured) that provided shade
for the fern garden and the benches at the Lanning Fountain.
Other loses include a large maple on the Burton lawn, an
elm on Green Street and a giant pine and oak just past the
Japanese Tea Hut.
The Botanic Garden has not yet decided what the replacements might be for these
areas but expect it to be 50-70 years before the Lanning Fountain area appears
as it did last summer.
