Rate of High Marks
At the beginning of every academic year, the sophomores
who achieved the
highest grade-point averages during their first year at Smith
are acknowledged with the Arthur Ellis Hamm Prize. This fall,
an astounding 10 students received the award.
The prize was endowed and first
awarded in 1918 by Elizabeth Creevey Hamm '05 in memory of
her husband, Captain Arthur Ellis Hamm. The document establishing
the fund stated that the income is "to
be awarded annually to a member of the freshman class on
the basis of the mid-year record." In 1934, the basis
of consideration for the prize was extended, and now the
award is based on the full year's record.
