Smith
to Honor Beloved Athlete, Inspiration to Many
NORTHAMPTON,
Mass.—Smith will host
a ceremony remembering, celebrating and honoring Marly Pineda ’08
(M.S. 2010) on Sunday, Sept. 12, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
in the Campus Center Carroll Room.
Pineda, a standout member of
the swimming and diving team at Smith, died in a bicycle
accident in Boston in early August.
Pineda served as swim
team assistant coach for the past two years while earning
her master’s degree in exercise and sport
studies. In addition, she was the master’s swimming coach
at Smith and taught and coached many child and adult swimmers
locally. Pineda had just started a new position this summer
as head master’s swimming coach of Cambridge, and served
as a volunteer assistant swimming coach at Harvard University.
Pineda is remembered fondly
by those who knew her at Smith. ()
“Marly was a tremendous person and coach, who cared about helping people learn
how to swim with more ease and improve their competitive performance,” said Kim
Bierwert, head coach of swimming and diving, who worked closely with Pineda for
the six years she attended Smith.
The ceremony honoring Pineda
will allow opportunities for attendees to share thoughts
about her. Refreshments will be served.

A memorial fund has been established
in Marly’s name to support student internships in athletics,
coaching or education. Donations can be made at the remembrance
ceremony or (after
