the Words of Those Who Knew Her
Smith will host a ceremony
remembering, celebrating and honoring Marly Pineda on
Sunday, Sept. 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the Campus
Center Carroll Room.

“When I think of Marly, the first thing that comes to my mind is her smile. She
always smiled. I still remember that she was always on the side of the first
lane and watching us. Whenever I felt tired, she would always encourage me to
keep going on. Since English is not my first language, sometimes I didn't get
the meaning of the instruction. Marly would always explain everything to me and
never get frustrated. I love Marly. I can't believe that she is not with us anymore.
I hope she is safe and happy in heaven, and I know she will always be smiling
and watching us swimming. She will always be in my heart.“

my best in and out of the pool. She was just a genuine person

While completing our master’s degree at Smith College, I
was always impressed by her love for swimming and the athletes
she coached. She would answer all of my swimming questions
with a smile, no matter how basic or trivial. … Due to alphabetical
fate, we were seated next to each other at graduation. We
had the best time talking and joking throughout the ceremony,
it made that day forever memorable, and Marly will always
be that fantastic young woman who shared that moment with

made her happiest, and her life was about sharing that with
others through swim lessons and coaching. She had a beautiful
smile that was almost always on her face and she rarely spoke
negatively about anyone. She was quiet, happy, focused, and
filled with positive energy. She had a laugh that can only
be described as a small explosion of joy... like a bubble
of happiness that was just waiting under the surface to burst.”

"I always envied Marly’s
fashion sense and confidence with which she wore bright colors
and patterns. In a program filled with sweatpants, T-shirts
and hoodies it was easy to pick Marly out in our crowd. Though
on the quieter side, I was privileged enough to experience
her wit and sharp observations during various group projects
or walks through the halls. Marly always sat in the same chair,
no matter which class—s'more pop-tart and soda in hand—and
she had no qualms making it known you were in ‘her’ seat. Far
more than the vacancy in ‘Marly’s’ chair will be missed in
the school days ahead." |
