Invited to Dedication of New Turf Field at Smith
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Smith
College athletic department welcomes all members of the college
community and Northampton to attend the dedication of a new
state-of-the-art, artificial turf field, installed on the
athletic field this summer.
The dedication will precede
the Smith Pioneers field hockey team’s first game on the
turf field, on Friday, Sept. 17, at 3:45 p.m.
The Pioneers will take on local rival Mt. Holyoke College
on the new field immediately following the dedication.
The turf field was made possible
by the leadership philanthropy of a former student and her
parents, as well as the generosity of other alumnae, parents
and friends.
The $1.3 million project will
bring Smith’s field hockey and lacrosse programs in
line with similar facilities in the New England Women’s and
Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), and will also enable
the Pioneers’ field hockey squad to play home games on campus
for the first time in two years.
Not only will Smith benefit
from an athletic standpoint from the turf and its availability
during the offseason. The field will also represent an environmental
savings, eliminating the need for more than 900,000 gallons
of water used for irrigation, as well as the need for pesticides
and herbicides. A drainage system installed underneath the
field will release stored rainwater that will recharge the
land.
The name of the field will be
unveiled at the dedication. |
