Congratulations to Smith's Fulbright winners, alternates and finalists for the 2017-18 competition year!

Smith students garnered 17 Fulbright Fellowship offers (another one was short-listed as an Alternate). The winners included 14 Smith undergraduates and 3 alumnae. Among them, 5 plan to pursue research projects, 1 intends to study for a master degree, and 11 aim to complete English teaching assistantships.

Smith's cohort of 31 Fulbright applicants registered a 55% success rate compared to the national average of 22%.

Fulbright awardees in 2017-18 target 15 different countries. Our adventurous, trail-blazing students will gain international confidence and represent the U.S. in nations including Germany, France, India, Thailand, Malta, Colombia, Finland, Taiwan, Malaysia, Lithuania, Vietnam, Norway, South Korea, and Kenya. One Smith applicant was wait-listed as an Alternate to Andorra.

This year, 7 applicants—41% of the winning candidates—self-identify as minority students.

We once again thank Smith faculty and staff who contributed in various capacities (31 Faculty Fulbright Mentors, 61 Recommenders, 36 Consultants, 16 Foreign Language Evaluators). Appreciation is also extended to other staff who supported this campus-wide collaboration from various quarters including the Jacobson, Wurtele ,and Lewis centers, the Registrar's, Class Deans, Disability, and Student Financial Services offices, plus Institutional Review Board, and Information Technology Services.

It is this rallying around that helps keep Smith the strongest Fulbright program in the nation.

Congratulations to Smith's Fulbright Candidates, Finalists, Fellows, and Alternates for the 2016-17 competition year!

The 37 Smith candidates for 2016-17 included 28 seniors, 7 alumnae, a graduate student, and a research fellow. Of them, 18 applied to conduct research projects, 5 to study for masters degrees, 13 to teach English as a second language, and one (an alumna who uses a wheelchair) to pursue an art-performance project of mixed-ability dance in Uruguay.

Of our 37 applicants, 27 were recognized as Finalists (73%), from which 14 were offered Fulbright Fellowships (38% of applicants) and 4 were designated Alternates (11%).

These candidates applied to 29 countries, including Smith’s first applicant to Nigeria. About 46% of them (17 applicants) self-identified as minority candidates. Each of our applicants demonstrated the talent, intelligence, and enthusiasm Smithies carry overseas as they venture around the globe representing the college and the United States.

We thank the some 200 Smith faculty and staff who supported our Fulbright candidates as they completed about 1000 pages of application material. Your guidance, advice and encouragement as Faculty Fulbright Mentors, Recommenders, Consultants, and Foreign Language Evaluators were invaluable, and the college is grateful for the enormous assistance you provided.

We also extend our appreciation to other staff who supported this campus-wide collaboration from various quarters including: the Jacobson, Wurtele, and Lewis centers; the Registrar's, Class Deans, Disability, and Student Financial Services offices; plus the Institutional Review Board and Information Technology Services.

It is this rallying around that helps keep Smith the strongest Fulbright program in the nation:

Congratulations to Smith's fellowship winners, alternates and finalists for the 2015-16 competition year.

Among other awards, Smith students garnered 19 Fulbright Fellowship offers (another 2 were short-listed as Alternates), 1 Beinecke Scholarship and 2 DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Fellowships.

For the Fulbright, Smith's record cohort of 43 applicants registered a 44% success rate compared to the national average of 17%. Our success rate for the English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) alone is 63%.

Fulbright offers target 16 different countries, which means that Smithies are reaching out further across the globe, with five first-time countries this year among all the applicants, three of whom were selected, with a fourth standing by as an Alternate.
The increasing number of countries Smithies are headed towards also shows how our adventurous trail-blazing students are gaining in international confidence as they venture forth into more foreign regions off the beaten track to represent the United States.

Among our applicants, about 16 or 37% were minority students, who at eight winners among them constitute 41% of Smith's Fellows this year.

Congratulations also to students who applied and were named finalists for other prestigious awards like the Marshall, Gates and Rhodes. That Smith records finalists for these fellowships, a rare achievement, is testament to the preparation and dedication invested in these applications by students, faculty and staff alike.

We once again thank Smith faculty and staff who contributed in 273 capacities (42 Faculty Fulbright Mentors, 104 Recommenders, 101 Consultants, 26 Foreign Language Evaluators).

Appreciation is also extended to staff members who supported this campus-wide collaboration from various quarters including the Clark Science, Wurtele, Jacobson, Lazarus, and Lewis centers, the Registrar's, Class Deans, Disability, and Student Financial Services offices, plus IRB and ITS.

It is this rallying around that helps keep Smith the strongest Fulbright program in the nation:

For the first time in 32 years, a Smith College candidate has won the highly prestigious Marshall Scholarship. Tess Grogan '14 applied to study English Literature at St Andrews University in Scotland. Read the full story here.

Congratulations to this year's 20 Fulbright winners, a 48% success rate in the ratio of winners to applicants versus a national 17% average.

In 2015-16, our 11 Research Fellows and 9 Teaching Fellows will fan out across the globe to 16 countries on 4 continents, including to Belgium, China, Morocco, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turkey. Two will study for master's degrees in the United Kingdom, a Fulbright first for Smith.

We honor all the 42 candidates who completed Fulbright applications in 2014: This cohort represents a record 42% minority students among both the original 42 candidates and the short-listed 31 finalists who comprised a first-round 74% success rate.

We thank the 250 Smith faculty and staff supporters — in the form of 45 Faculty Fulbright Mentors, 101 Recommenders, 78 Consultants, and 21 Foreign Language Evaluators, staff members from the Clark Science, Jacobson, Lazarus, and Lewis Global Studies centers, the Registrar's, Class Deans, Disability Services and Diversity offices, and IRB, SFS and ITS — who pitched in with key support. It is this rallying around that helps keep Smith the strongest Fulbright program in the nation with the highest success ratio of winners to applicants among all top-producing institutions.

Please notify us via the easy form of any Smith fellowships winner not listed below.

FULBRIGHT

140 countries

The Fulbright record goes back 33 years to 1970 during which time there have been 437 applicants and 77 awards for an average of about 13 applicants a year and about two awards a year. This does not take at-large alumnae applicants and the 16 alum fellows into account as there's no way of knowing the number of alum applicants (they applied direct not via Smith) whereas every alum recipient is identified as a Smith graduate.

From 2003, the results include Smith alums because they were brought into the Smith mentoring program in 2002 although they still applied direct to IIE. From the 2003 competition (results announced 2004) alums have had the option to apply through Smith rather than direct to IIE which they can still do instead.

Oxford University

Fellowship founded in 1903. Women allowed to compete from 1977 after Smith Professor Peter de Villiers, a former Rhodes Scholar from South Africa and then a professor at Harvard, was instrumental in having the British Parliament change Rhodes's will in 1976 to allow women to participate.

Smith has had two Rhodes Scholars named in African countries, and a third alumna who was at Harvard when she won. In 2001 Katrina Gardner was the first known American Rhodes national finalist (promoted from state finalist) to be sponsored by Smith.

The recorded year is the year of the competition and the result, which are the same. The results refer to the American competition. Smithies applying elsewhere or through other institutions are listed as such.
