Karla Zelaya

Visiting Assistant Professor of Africana Studies

Karla Zelaya earned her Ph.D. in Black Studies from the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at UMASS Amherst. Her work focuses on colonial north American/U.S. Black literatures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She has taught a wide array of classes in Africana Studies over her career including classes on The New Negro Movement, Black Latine Literature,  Black Caribbean Literature, Blackness, Globalization and Imperialism, Black Women in the Americas and the Caribbean, and Black Southern Literature. Karla calls the Bronx, New York and the Black Atlantic coast of Nicaragua home.
