Bridging the Experience Gap

9:15am - 12noon   Presentations of different approaches to meeting students' quantitative experiences and backgrounds:

• The Wright State Model for Engineering Mathematics Education: Uncorking the Bottleneck to Student Success.
  Nathan Klingbeil, Professor and Dean, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Wright State University.
  Wright State University restructured the engineering curriculum to include calculus topics developed as in-time tools for solving engineering problems.
• A Multi-pronged Approach to Enhancing General Chemistry.
  Jani Benoit, Professor of Chemistry at Wheaton College, on invitation-based parallel course with extra weekly hour of quantitative development.
• ONEXYS: An Online Experience to Prepare Incoming Students for Quantitative Reasoning at Yale.
  Jim Rolf, Yale University, the ONline EXperience for Yale Scholars (ONEXYS), a summer online, social media mentoring program with online quantitative learning modules.

12noon - 1:30pm Lunch

1:30 - 4:15pm Designing bridges
A workshop aimed to investigate various ways that instructors, staff, programs, departments, and/or institutions can work to bridge the experience gap that presents as math-preparedness issues.
