Portfolio Workshop
March 8, 2013
12 to 1p.m., an introduction to portfolio design (pizza included); 1 to 2p.m., a discussion about applying to graduate programs and internships pertaining to design of the built environment; 2 to 3p.m., an introduction to software and photography relating to portfolio design; 3 to 4p.m., the afternoon will conclude with the opportunity for students to have their own portfolios and work sample pages in-progress individually critiqued. Discussion will be led by Stephanie Brown, architecture course instructor at the University of Massachusetts and Mount Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges. All students are invited to attend any or all of the sessions. The lunch session will include pizza, courtesy of the Department of Art.

Field Station Friday!

Join us on one of our regular trips to Smith's Ada and Archibald MacLeish Field Station! Hike the trails, relax outside, or explore the newly opened environmental building. Space is limited. The van leaves from the annex road between Chapin House and the Campus Center at 12:30 p.m. Friday and returns from the MacLeish Field Station to Smith College at 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m.- depending on the day's participants. Eric Toensmeir: "Paradise Lot"
March 27, 2013
In Paradise Lot: Two Plant Geeks, One-Tenth of an Acre, and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City, Eric Toensmeir tells the story of how he transformed a barren urban lot into an edible paradise. This case study of permaculture design and edible landscaping follows the nine years it took to develop the site, which now features over forty species of fruit and seventy perennial edible leaves on a tenth of an acre. Besides authoring Paradise Lot (which features contributions by Jonathan Bates), Toensmeier wrote the award-winning Perennial Vegetables and co-authored Edible Forest Gardens. He will sign copies of Paradise Lot following his reading.
