EDUCATION:
-Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge (Hussey 75) MAJOR LIFE EVENTS: CHILDHOOD TEMPERAMENT: -awkward "enforced intimacy" between Duckworth and Stephen children (Lee 118) -lost father at age 2; kept saying "Where's Georgie's Papa?" (Lee 118) -dependent and devoted to his mother (Lee 118) -"sentimental, unintelligent, emotional boy" (Lee 118) -Virginia described him as "possessed of a very moderate share of brains...Brains were of very little practical use in the world he reflected--They only led to overwork and nervous breakdowns" (Lee 118) -constantly made fun of/caricatured/satirized by the family, especially Vanessa and Virginia (Lee 148) ADULT TEMPERAMENT: -"conventional, 'sentimental and pompous,' and utterly unintellectual...he was quite alien to the Stephen children" (Lee 119) −"kind-hearted, benign, and a pillar of the establishment" in the Stephen children's childhoods (Lee 119) −Virginia and Vanessa later characterized him as a "piggish, lustful idiot" (Lee 148) −allegedly sexually assaulted Virginia repeatedly (Lee 151-152) ADULT SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: -he was rich while the Stephen girls were poor-as their unofficial guardian took them to social events (Lee 119) -controlled Virginia and Vanessa for a period of time--socially, emotionally; seemed to be oppressive--it was a "grotesque and intrusive regime" (Lee 148) ADULT WORK HABITS: -"failed his diplomatic exams but made a career for himself working for ten years with Charles Booth, the social reformer and author of the massive investigation into urban poverty..."
