MAJOR LIFE EVENTS: CHILDHOOD TEMPERAMENT: -"pale, golden-haired, dreamily blue-eyed replica of her mother, meekly under her shadow" (Lee 119) -> Julia treated her "much more severely and critically than she treated her sons" (Lee 119) -"conventional"..."believed in domestic order as a model for social organisation" like her mother (Lee 120) ADULT TEMPERAMENT: -stifled by Leslie after Julia's death – VW in her memoir "examined the oppressive and torturing relationship between Stella and Leslie" (Lee 119) -"after Julia's death Leslie had completely appropriated Stella as a substitute and she had allowed him to do it" (Lee 135) -Leslie "punished Stella for trying to leave"...was "obstructive and emotional" (Lee 135) -"aroused pity and tenderness in VW" (Lee 119) ADULT SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: ADULT WORK HABITS: -not intellectual, but "efficient" (Lee 119)-> took care of household even before Julia died −"active member of Octavia Hill's team of middle-class ladies working in the London slums" (Lee 120) ->female equivalent to her brother's work with Booth SIGNS OF MANIA/HYPOMANIA: SIGNS OF DEPRESSION: PHYSICAL AILMENTS/CHRONIC ILLNESSES: -childhood bout of rheumatic fever (Lee 119) also afflicted her grandmother and mother-> suggested in "Sketch of the Past" that the illness 'touched' her or "produced 'a stoppage in her mind, a gentle impassivity about books and learning" (Lee 119) -returned ill from her honeymoon, said to be pregnant but also diagnosed with "peritonitis" but no operation "performed for three months" (Lee 137) ALCOHOL/OTHER DRUG ABUSE: HOSPITALIZATION: OTHER: -"life difficult and her destiny pathetic" (Lee 119) -"beautiful, romantic, and admired" (Lee 121) -traveled abroad with George -> Julia called them "the wandering Jews" (Lee 121) |
