-there was fear expressed in the family that Isabella Thackeray's "madness" had skipped a generation and affected Laura (Lee 74)
-"When Laura Stephen failed to develop as quickly as other children, Leslie worried that she had inherited her grandmother's madness, as well as the mental instability of some male members of his own family" (Webb 10).
