EDUCATION:
MAJOR LIFE EVENTS: -was born prematurely--weighed under three pounds (Lee 99) -"when Virginina was five"--when Laura was 16 or 17--"Laura moved away from the family home to be cared for in the country" (Webb 10) CHILDHOOD TEMPERAMENT: - "a 'backward'...daughter" (Lee 25) -Laura, a "difficult presence," represented "an unmanageable aberration from daughterliness" (Lee 73) -"a terribly puzzling and problematic charge" whose "behaviour...appeared increasingly peculiar and uncontrollable" (Lee 74) -"She was slow to read...could not learn to write, and could not concentrate. She chattered excessively...had some odd vocal mannerisms...uncontrolled gestures like spitting out or choking on her food, she was accident-prone...and she howled and shrieked" (Lee 100). -Lived in a separate nursery from the other Stephen children, made her "both part and not part of the household" (Webb 10) ADULT TEMPERAMENT: ADULT SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: ADULT WORK HABITS: SIGNS OF MANIA/HYPOMANIA: SIGNS OF DEPRESSION: PHYSICAL AILMENTS/CHRONIC ILLNESSES: -Born premature and was slow to speak and teethe (Lee 100) -Suffered from "a mental disability, possibly a form of autism, which may have been inherited from either side of the family" (Lee 102). ALCOHOL/OTHER DRUG ABUSES: HOSPITALIZATION: -yes, in "asylum in York" (Bell 22) OTHER: -there was fear expressed in the family that Isabella Thackeray's "madness" had skipped a generation and affected Laura (Lee 74) -"When Laura Stephen failed to develop as quickly as other children, Leslie worried that she had inherited her grandmother's madness, as well as the mental instability of some male members of his own family" (Webb 10). |
