Smith’s housing system is unique. Here, most students live on campus throughout their college career (though off-campus housing is available after your first year) in house communities, not standard dormitories. Students from all four class years reside in the houses, introducing you to people from a wide range of backgrounds. For many Smithies, their house becomes like their second family, with lifelong friendships often formed with the people who live just down the hall from you.

Houses, Not Dorms

Wonder what it’s like to live in a Smith house? Check out some quick tours from current Smithies.

From Day One

On the day you move in, you’re introduced to your student leadership team. This group of students, elected by your house community the prior semester, is there to support you every step of the way—they’ll even help you haul your minifridge up to your room!

From questions about the house to advice on choosing classes, your student leaders help you acclimate to college life and find your place at Smith.

Campus Dining, Elevated

Having 11 dining halls—plus two cafés!—already sets Smith apart. Add to that the fact that each dining hall is located in a student house, and you’ve got a truly unique campus dining experience.

Anyone can eat at any dining hall, which together serve a wide array of food including delicious vegan, kosher, halal, and gluten-free options.

Steeped in Tradition

Each Friday afternoon, students gather in their house living rooms to enjoy tea and snacks, courtesy of Smith Dining. A beloved tradition that dates back over 100 years, Friday tea is a chance for Smithies to reconnect and recharge after a busy week.

Did you know Smith has its own official tea blends? Crafted for the inauguration of President Sarah Willie-LeBreton, the teas have quickly become a staple in dining halls, the cafés, and—of course—at Friday teas across campus.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Each of Smith’s neighborhoods contains a handful of unique houses that vary in architectural style, size, and location. From the grand houses in the Quad, which house around 100 students, to smaller, quaint houses that 10 or so call home, wherever on campus you live, you’re bound to find community.

Take a (virtual) stroll through each neighborhood and picture yourself at home, at Smith.

Hubbard House

“The community at Smith is so supportive! The housing system offers close residential communities. I love attending House Tea and movie nights, a tradition at Hubbard House.”

Tyler House

”I remember making the conscious decision to start sitting in the Tyler House living room during mealtimes because I wanted to run for HONS (Head of New Students). Through doing that I was able to be Tyler House HONS for the 2022–23 school year and I was able to make a lot of close connections in my house that I still have today.“

Baldwin House

“Community is the core of Smith College. To be surrounded by brilliant minds and kind hearts that inspire you to become better, to always have someone that looks up to you and that you look up to. [Community is] a warm mug of tea waiting for you to debrief the week with your friend in their dorm room.”
