Information Technology Services Y2K Summary
The following summary describes the Y2K readiness as of May 18, 1999, of the systems and networks for which Information Technology Services is responsible.
Multi-user Computers Systems and Campus Network
· Campus-wide Data Network ? All components have been verified as compliant by the manufacturer with the exception of one component that is scheduled for a software upgrade in late May. · Novell NetWare ? Our current operating system, Novell NetWare 3.11, is not Y2K compliant. Plans have been made to upgrade to a compliant version on all servers before December 31, 1999.
· Novell Servers ? 30% of the Novell server hardware has been upgraded to be compliant. During the summer, the remaining Novell servers will be reconfigured and replaced with compliant systems.
· Multi-user Systems ? 36% of the multi-user VAX and Unix systems have been upgraded to be compliant. The remaining systems require software patches only. These are scheduled for summer 1999.
· Telecommunication Systems ? Both the Rolm/Siemens 9750 telecommunications switch and the PhoneMail system were upgraded in 1998 to be compliant.
Institutional-wide Administrative Applications· BANNER ? All modules of BANNER and BANNER Web are at the current release which has been certified as compliant by the vendor. · ORACLE and FOCUS ? The primary institutional database applications, ORACLE and FOCUS, have been certified as compliant by the vendors.
· Major Departmental Applications ? ITS is working with departments to certify or upgrade departmental applications (e.g., FAMIS, FAMS, MPS, and CBORD before December 31, 1999. Many systems have compliance statements on file.
Desktop Computers· College-owned Desktop Computers ? ITS technicians have tested every model of Dell computer on campus and checked vendor compliant statements. All Macintosh models have been certified compliant by Apple Computer. Approximately 54 percent of all systems on campus are hardware compliant. A small number of machines (65 systems or 4 percent) are too old to be upgraded and will be replaced with compliant hardware during the summer. Software patches can repair the Y2K problems with the remaining 42 percent of the campus desktop computers. The patch will be installed automatically the first time the user connects to any campus Novell server on or after January 1, 2000. Instructions for manually implementing the corrective action will be available from ITS for desktop computers not connected to the campus network (e.g., faculty computers that are located off campus). · Privately-owned Desktop Computers ? ITS will provide instructions to students, faculty, and staff for implementing a recommended Y2K readiness strategy for their personal desktop computers. A simple fix that will work on most systems can be completed in a few minutes by novice users. These instructions will be distributed in September.
